This month in the Rising Sisterhood our theme for the month is a big question - Who Speaks for God?&nbsp;And of course, in traditional WeRise style, we aren’t beating around the bush. So we are going straight for the most controversial and polarising subject of all…HADITH.&nbsp;You may know that scholars have divided Hadith into different categories sahih, da’if, hasan etc. But I too have done my own research (no seriously I have a PhD) so here are my very real and extremely accurate categories (please ask for references - I’ll send you a voice note):<ul><li style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Dodgy Hadith</li><li style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Unbelievable Hadith</li><li style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Sexist Hadith</li><li style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Disgusting Hadith</li><li style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Hadith that sound like they were made up by an angry, scorned husband who wanted to get back at his wife</li><li style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Hadith that hugely contradict the Quran</li><li style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Things that the Prophet definitely wouldn’t have said</li><li style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Things that the Prophet might actually have said</li><li style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Hadith that make me feel like the Prophet did say them because they reflect the beauty of the Qur’anic message and also transmit the essence of the Prophet’s love and care for all beings and the Earth but also we can’t actually be sure because none of us were there in 7th century Arabia and the Qur’an is the only unchanged source of Divine knowledge in fact it is the only source of Divine knowledge because all Hadith were transmitted recorded translated debated and interpreted by men in a particular social and political context many of whom had their own sinister agendas and/or limitations and ultimately we have to make our own decisions about what we take as authentic or inauthentic and also where are the women.&nbsp;</li></ul>Let’s take a moment to honour a classic from the Sexist category, shall we?“Women are deficient in intelligence and religion.” Sure, hun. Tell that to the women running businesses, raising children, doing all the life admin, and dealing with a passive aggressive mother-in-law while bleeding once a month. We are not spiritually deficient, we are SAINTS. Reconiiiizze.Here’s one from the Dodgy Hadith category (and there’s plenty more where that came from):“If I were to command anyone to prostrate before another, I would have commanded women to prostrate before their husbands.” Ah yes, nothing screams monotheism and Tawhid quite like suggesting anyone should bow down to anyone other than God. And now for a true gem from the Disgusting Hadith category:“If a man had a sore from head to toe, oozing with pus and blood, and his wife came and licked it clean, she still would not have fulfilled his rights.”Yes dude, this is an actual narration found in some collections, also considered ‘authentic’.Honestly, what even is this?First of all — EEEWWWW. Second — if your theology requires a woman to perform a grotesque, dehumanising act just to maybe be considered a decent wife, then what exactly are we worshipping here? Because it 100%&nbsp; isn’t a God of dignity or humanity. And that is not my God i.e. the God of the Qur’an.If you are also horrified/confused/sad/indignant/amused or any other reaction that is not ‘yeah, cool that makes total sense’ then you are one of us! We would LOVE to have you in the Rising Sisterhood to be taught by actual female scholars who kind of know what they are talking about, and have real conversations that matter to our lives as Muslim women, in a space that nurtures critical thinking and spiritual openness by being a totally judgement-free zone.
