Know Thyself, Know Thy Rabb: Why Self-Discovery is the First Step on the Spiritual PathBefore we can hope to truly know Allah, we must begin with the most intimate and yet often neglected relationship of all—the relationship with ourselves. The great sages and scholars of our tradition have long reminded us of this truth: “Whoever knows themselves, knows their Lord.” But for some reason, we as Muslims have neglected this fundamental step of our spiritual journey. Anything to do with the ‘Self’ has been labelled as hyper-individualistic, a Western export, or a narcissistic ‘wellness’ trend. And for women, this path of knowing ourselves has often been especially obstructed. We have been taught to serve, to sacrifice, and to silence our own voices, needs and desires. From childhood, many of us are conditioned to give endlessly to others—family, community, spouses—while leaving ourselves last, if we appear on the list at all. To turn inward, to ask “Who am I? What do I need? What do I long for?” can feel selfish, alien, or unsafe. But we need to remember that self-discovery is the very foundation of the spiritual path.The Mirror of the SelfAllah created us as Ayat—signs. Just as the Qur’an invites us to look at the sky, the Earth, and the oceans as reflections of Divine Majesty, so too are we called to look inward. The self (nafs) is not simply the ‘ego’, the ‘lower self’ of desires, urges, impulses or unconsious thought; it is a mirror of Divine creativity, the life-force that created us from nothing into something, with our own unique soul blueprint. There is no-one else like us on Earth that has ever existed or ever will. This is not a narcissistic thought - we reflect with awe at the uniqueness of each snowflake and leaf - yet we think when we reflect on our own uniqueness we are being self-obsessed!For women especially, self-neglect has been sanctified, framed as piety, patience, or obedience. But in truth, to neglect ourselves is to turn away from one of the clearest signposts pointing us toward our Rabb. What if honouring the truth of who we are is itself an act of worship?Self-discovery is not a woo-woo indulgence, it is a form of devotion that will bring you closer to your Creator. It is peeling back the layers of conditioning, trauma, culture, and ego that have clouded our hearts and made us forget our original, unique essence—the fitrah with which we were born. To know ourselves is to uncover that essence, and in doing so, we catch a glimpse of the One who placed it within us.Why We Fear OurselvesFor many of us - especially women - the act of self-reflection feels uncomfortable, even frightening. To sit in silence with our thoughts and emotions can stir up what we’d rather keep buried: our insecurities, our mistakes, our painful past, our unfulfilled dreams, our unmet needs. And yet, it is precisely here—in the rawness of our inner landscape—that Allah meets us. When we deny ourselves the courage to face our shadows, we also deny ourselves the chance to encounter Divine Mercy in its most intimate form.The Qur’an reminds us that Allah is closer to us than our jugular vein. But how can we feel that closeness if we are estranged from ourselves? If we live in distraction, always looking outward for validation or meaning, we miss the tender voice of the soul quietly calling us home.Self-Knowledge as a Gateway to Divine KnowledgeSelf-discovery in the Islamic tradition is not self-centeredness. It is self-purification (tazkiyah). And for women, it is also self-restoration: returning to what the world told us to abandon. It begins with honesty—acknowledging who we are, what we carry, and how we show up in the world. From there, the path unfolds in layers:<ul><li>Awareness of the Nafs: Recognising the parts of ourselves driven by ego, comparison, and fear. This awareness is not about condemnation, but about seeing clearly so that we can begin the work of healing our painful and destructive patterns of thought and behaviour. For many women, this is also where we confront the internalised voices of patriarchy and culture—the messages that told us to stay small, quiet, and selfless, even at the expense of our wellbeing.&nbsp;</li><li>Awareness of the Qalb (Heart): Listening to the whispers of the Heart, the seat of sincerity, intention and Love. As women, our hearts are often pulled in many directions—toward duty, sacrifice, and caretaking—while our own desires and needs are dismissed. Over time, the heart can become heavy with unspoken grief or silenced longings. We give without receiving. Awareness of the Qalb is about tending to the heart’s wounds with gentleness, reclaiming the right to feel, to want, and to live in alignment with our own truth. When the heart is nurtured through self-compassion and self-honouring, it becomes a wellspring of love that can nourish us and those around us without depleting us.</li><li>Awareness of the Ruh (Spirit): Remembering that within us is a sacred light, the Divine breath that connects us eternally to our Rabb. This essence is indestructable, no matter how much the world has tried to make us forget ourselves. Women are often conditioned to ‘dim our light’, to make ourselves more palatable to others, and to not make others uncomfortable with our brightness. To awaken to the Ruh is to remember that we are luminous beings: we are not just ‘women’.- we are souls, radiant and purposeful. </li></ul>Returning to LoveAt its core, self-discovery is an act of love: love of truth, love of growth, love of the One who created us with intention and purpose. To know ourselves is to reclaim our birthright as honoured and deliberate creations of Allah, to remember that we are not mistakes, not accidents, but purposeful souls placed in this time and space for a reason.And once we know this—deep in our bones and blood—we cannot help but turn to the Source of that purpose in awe and gratitude. We can align more fully with our Divine destiny, knowing we are guided and supported to fulfil that destiny - if we only keep going on the spiral-path of self-discovery and let it unfurl ever outwards and upwards through the journey of our lives - and eventually back to God.Know thyself, know thy Rabb. This is the true spiritual path—not in worship, obedience, or abstract philosophy; but in the courage to be our true selves, authentically and unapologetically ourselves. This is the way to Know Your Rabb.
